Chapter 17

John

I never planned on falling asleep beside Elisa, but I woke with a start to find the room dark. I shifted off the bed carefully so that I wouldn’t disturb her—my wife. She was sleeping soundly, her shoulders rising and falling evenly. I threw on a fresh set of shorts and walked over to the patio door. There, I pulled back the thick drape and stared outside. It had probably been dark for hours. Beyond the stretch of white sand, the ocean beckoned.

“Thinking about going for a swim?”

I turned to find Elisa studying me. Her hair was mussed wildly on one side. Her cheeks were flushed from sleep, and a sheet crease ran from her chin all the way to her right eye. She was entirely too adorable.

My hand tightened on the drapery before I let it fall back into place. One didn’t find their wife adorable. One found their wife alluring. Enticing. Sexy. Beautiful. Adorable was a new word for me. It might not have been a big one for anyone else, but for me, it was so much more than just eight letters.

“I was.”

Elisa threw back the sheet and, for a moment, my blood surged. She walked over to her suitcase and grabbed out some kind of a gauzy-looking cover-up and slipped it on. The green matched her jade eyes, and the sheer fabric wasn’t doing anything to calm the raging erection I had going.

“I think the night is the best time for a swim. The sun isn’t so brutal. The water is probably calmer. The sand won’t burn the crap out of my feet.” She smiled shyly. “I don’t know. Do you think it’s more romantic?” When I looked at her blankly, she smiled back. “I think it is.”

She walked past me and pushed back the drapery, and then she slid open the door. I was just about to ask her about a bathing suit when she took off running, her hair flying out behind her as she laughed her way happily down to the beach.

She looked like a nymph, and all I could do was stare. Beneath the bright moon and ethereal stars, she could only be described as a vision.

Sand puffed out behind her with every light step. She flew over the beach, casting aside the gauzy cover-up when she neared the tide. She didn’t stop when she reached the water’s edge, but kept going and then dove in. She swam hard, and like it had during the afternoon, my heart rate increased.

What if she ran into an undercurrent? A tide she wasn’t expecting?

I slipped out the door without bothering to close it fully behind me. I was running across the sand, my bare feet churning it up, before I even knew what I was doing. With my long stride, it only took a few seconds before I reached the water. I plunged in, the coolness being a sudden reprieve from the warm night and the sticky humidity that had hit me full blast upon our door’s opening.
